Eighth grade students at Butler County Middle School recently worked together to write summaries of an informational text, putting the Collaboration pillar of Butler County's Portrait of a Learner into practice. Principal Tim Freeman shared how students paired up and talked through the reading, deciding together what mattered most and how to say it clearly.
Summarizing a text well takes more than reading it. Students had to agree on the main ideas, cut out what wasn't essential, and put the message into their own words. Doing that as a team meant listening to a partner's take, comparing it with their own, and building a stronger summary together than either student could have written alone. That kind of give and take reflects the durable skills at the heart of Communication: Listening Skills, Social Interaction, Written Language Skills, and Empathy and Respect..
Working through a text together also gave students practice with skills they'll use in every subject and long after school. Reading closely, explaining an idea clearly, and building on someone else's thinking are habits that carry over into every classroom and, eventually, into any job that requires teamwork. Butler County Middle School continues to weave the Portrait of a Learner into daily lessons, not just special events.
