At North Butler Elementary, the spirit of Butler County Schools’ Portrait of a Learner framework shines brightly through a simple yet powerful act: reading together.
Recently, Mrs. Ray and Ms. Washer’s fifth-grade students partnered with kindergarteners to share library books and assist them with Accelerated Reader (AR) tests: a collaboration that captured the essence of Global Citizenship, one of the district’s five core Portrait of a Learner pillars.
The project, highlighted by Assistant Principal Lexie Belcher, was more than an opportunity to practice literacy. It was a lesson in empathy, leadership, and community connection, which are qualities that define what it means to be part of the Butler County Schools family.
“Our fifth graders took great pride in helping our youngest learners,” said Belcher. “They weren’t just reading books; they were building confidence, modeling kindness, and showing what it means to be part of a global community right here in our school.”
Learning Beyond the Classroom
The initiative began as a literacy enrichment activity but quickly evolved into something deeper. By pairing older and younger students, teachers encouraged mentorship and peer learning that reinforced both academic and social growth. The gym filled with pairs of students reading side-by-side, laughing, and exploring stories together.
Through this experience, fifth graders developed a sense of responsibility, patience, and understanding, while kindergarteners gained encouragement and a newfound excitement for reading. The result was a dynamic learning environment where every child had a role: as teacher, learner, or friend.
Global Citizenship in Action
Global Citizenship, as defined in Butler County Schools’ Portrait of a Learner, goes beyond geography. It encourages students to build connections and take responsibility for their impact on others. When older students guided younger ones through their AR tests, they embodied the district’s vision of demonstrating how small acts of kindness can contribute to a more connected and compassionate world.
“This is what lifelong learning looks like,” Belcher shared. “When students see themselves as leaders and mentors, they begin to understand their role not just in school, but in the wider community.”
