Celebrating National Literacy Month in Butler County Schools

September is National Literacy Month, and Butler County Schools is proud to join the celebration with a countywide proclamation and a series of school–community activities that spotlight “learning that matters to students.” Literacy is more than a skill, it’s the key that unlocks every other door of opportunity.
“Literacy opens every other door for our students,” said Superintendent Robert Tuck. “This month we’re spotlighting daily reading, library engagement, and real stories of how learning comes alive across Butler County.”
Literacy in Action: Student Voices
One featured project is Read & Podcast, where students script and record short podcast episodes that connect a book’s themes to their own reflections. These projects build reading, speaking, and listening skills while also strengthening communication which represent the very competencies outlined in Butler County’s Portrait of a Learner.
How Families and the Community Can Join
Families and community members play a vital role in growing lifelong readers. Here are a few ways to get involved this month:
-
Get a library card & read together – Explore the Butler County Public Library’s collections and set aside 5–15 minutes a day for family reading.
-
Follow along online – Butler County Schools will share simple updates, family-friendly resources, and student-created artifacts throughout September.
Why It Matters
Strong literacy skills form the foundation for lifelong success, benefiting not only individual students but the entire community. Butler County’s proclamation of September as National Literacy Month recognizes that literacy is essential to academic achievement, future readiness, and the overall health of our county.
Connecting to Our Portrait of a Learner
This celebration ties directly to the district’s mission to foster academic excellence, character development, and career readiness. By highlighting communication through reading and storytelling, we are living out the values of our Portrait of a Learner by preparing students to thrive as problem solvers, collaborators, and global citizens.
Together, let’s make this month a joyful reminder of how books, words, and stories can transform lives.
