    Character in Action

Mrs. McKee’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) group had the opportunity to experience the power of character during a visit to The Center for Courageous Kids (CCK) in Scottsville. This nonprofit medical camp is a haven for children with medical diagnoses, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and has welcomed tens of thousands of campers and families since it first opened.

The visit was more than just a tour. Mrs. McKee’s students volunteered alongside the camp’s dedicated staff, supporting and engaging with the campers in activities designed to inspire joy, independence, and belonging. From the sensory rooms and art studio to the music room and riding stables, the camp’s facilities offered endless chances for students to step up and serve.

Throughout the day, the students exemplified the core principles of character:

    • Professionalism: They conducted themselves with dignity and respect in all interactions.

    • Accountability: They embraced their roles as volunteers, ensuring they were helpful and reliable.

    • Ethical Conduct & Trustworthiness: They created connections based on compassion and respect, becoming trusted friends and mentors for the campers.

The experience was a powerful demonstration of how character shapes not only who these students are today, but also the kind of caring, responsible adults they will become.

Through their service at CCK, they discovered that true character isn’t just something you talk about. It’s something you live out in the moments you lift others up.
